Is Journalism Dead? – A Carey Dialogues Discussion

Investigative Journalist and Author, Carl Bernstein
One of the great things about working in public relations, is the opportunity to have a front seat to history. We have a varied range of clients accomplishing amazing things, and we appreciate the chance to work with them to support their efforts.
We helped our client The Carey Center for Global Good located in Rensselaerville, NY to kick off the “Carey Dialogues” with the newsworthy topic “Is Journalism Dead?”
Celebrated investigative journalist and author Carl Bernstein, award-winning essayist, and author of eight books and over 150 Time Magazine cover stories Lance Morrow, and two-time Pulitzer Prize winner Josh Friedman explored journalism today and its future in the 21st Century.
As one would expect, a lively discussion ensued with topics ranging from the changes in the consumption of news, to the social/cultural/political divisions in America and how that shapes news, to violence against reporters overseas.
Mr. Bernstein commented that news is the “best obtainable version of the truth,” and that “gossip, sensationalism and manufactured controversy,” common in today’s pop news culture “devalues real reporting.” He also stated that “great reporting is needed now more than ever,” but that even though consumption of the news continues to change, “strong and committed news institutions” are necessary to ensure quality reporting. Mr. Bernstein also admitted that he reads his news online throughout the day and evening and rarely picks up the hard copy of the newspaper.
